FRIENDLY
Spurs Reserves 2 Fulham Reserves 4
Oyvind Leonhardsen completed a successful comeback as the reserves somehow managed to lose a private friendly against Fulham on Wednesday.
The Norwegian international lasted the full 90 minutes and scored at a windswept Spurs Lodge in his first game since being sidelined for almost two months with a hamstring injury.
After being named in the squad and travelling to Bradford City last weekend ‘Leo’ must now have a chance of featuring in the derby against Arsenal on Monday.
The midfielder’s 18-yard strike put us 2-1 up at the start of the second half but despite us having the best of possession and chances Fulham — fielding former German international and European Cup winner Karlheinz Reidle and Paul Peschisolido up front - turned the game around to snatch victory in the final five minutes.
Against the wind in the first half we started brightly as Matthew Etherington raced onto Willem Korsten’s flick only for his dangerous cross to be cut out.
Four efforts followed in the next eight minutes. Korsten curled a free-kick over, Leonhardsen’s deflected shot forced a fine save from Fulham goalkeeper Anthony Tucker, Mark Gower’s effort went straight at Tucker and Korsten flashed an attempt wide.
Typically of the game Fulham then broke and opened the scoring. With 14 minutes on the clock Gower was caught in midfield, Steve Hayward’s pass released Peschisolido and the livewire striker fired his one-on-one chance into the top corner.
Our reaction was positive and after two more fine saves from Tucker to deny Neale Fenn and Simon Davies from close ranger we levelled.
John Piercy skipped away from a challenge down the right, his cross wasn’t cleared and Fenn fired a low shot from close range into the bottom corner.
Peschisolido then missed twice from close range and Tucker was there again to thwart Davies after the move of the half again featuring the Korsten-Etherington combination.
We took the lead just five minutes into the second half. Great hustle and bustle from Leonhardsen was rewarded when he dispossessed a Fulham defender, took aim and fired home from 20 yards for 2-1.
Fenn then had a decent penalty appeal turned down and within two minutes Fulham had levelled again with a bizarre goal. A move broke down and as the ball broke loose at the edge of our area Sammy Keevil hit a shot that would have ended up in the upper tier. However, such was the strength of the wind, the ball blew back into play, Fulham picked up the pieces and Hayward slotted in from close range.
Again we hit back as Fenn shot just wide, John Jackson’s inswinging corner had to be tipped over by Tucker and Ian Hillier’s cracking half-volley sailed inches wide.
But it wasn’t to be our day. With 10 minutes left Keevil latched onto Peschilsolido’s pass to finish well past Jamie Attwell and in the final minute Keevil was there again to tap in Hayward’s cross.
Spurs Reserves: Attwell, Piercy, Hillier, Doherty, Gardner, Etherington, Davies, Leonhardsen, Gower (Jackson 45), Korsten, Fenn (Kamanan 80).
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
