Leicester U21s v Spurs - Ugo's preview

18 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Ugo Ehiogu wants our Under-21s players to strive to be better while also remaining mindful of their league position when we take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tonight (Friday, March 18).

With the development of players very much a focus within our Academy set-up, Under-21s Coach Ugo says the boys must continue to try to improve themselves individually and at the same time look to turn their fortunes around as a group to avoid being dragged into the relegation places of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League.

Still looking for our first domestic win of 2016, we’re six points clear of Norwich City in 11th – the first of two relegation places in the division – with a game in hand but, with Leicester also looking over their shoulders just one place and three points ahead of the Canaries, Ugo expects this evening’s game to be a real test of character for our players, especially in light of the disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Norwich a week ago.

“With both teams hovering around above the bottom two places, nobody wants to lose tonight,” he said.

“Obviously we want to stay in the top flight with our football principles but there’s certainly a feeling that Leicester will be strong so we have to combat that and, in some ways, you hope that’s the case because it’s more of a stern test then.

“Part of the development of players is to develop a winning mentality and to find some sort of positivity when you’ve had a bad spell because you’re going to get ups and downs in football.

“We’re coming off of a big disappointment against Norwich but we’ve always said that this is an honest group and I think there’s been an honest reflection since that game. Obviously you have to show improvement on the pitch but the boys are aware of that and we’re expecting a reaction.

“We’ll learn a lot from this group of players after tonight’s game so we’re looking forward to it and from what we’ve seen in training the hope is that the boys will show what they can do.”
