Leicester U18s 3-1 Spurs U18s
05 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Jack Roles grabbed his second goal in as many games, but it wasn't enough to see our Under-18s take any points away from Leicester City on Saturday (March 5).
First-half goals from Harvey Barnes and Kairo Mitchell saw the Foxes take control of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League contest at their training ground and, after Roles stayed alert to pick up the pieces following a corner to reduce the arrears, it was Barnes again who completed a 3-1 win for the hosts.
There was a first start at this level for Nya Kirby with the Under-16s midfielder having stepped off the bench in last week's 4-3 win over West Bromwich Albion and he was soon in the thick of the action.
After Kirby's shot was blocked two minutes in, the ball fell to Roles in the area and he tried to poke the ball home but Leicester goalkeeper Cameron Yates kept it out with his legs.
Kazaiah Sterling then dragged wide with a left-footed shot from 20 yards before the home side took the lead on the quarter-of-an-hour mark. They counter-attacked from the half-way line and it was Barnes who got in to finish, the attacker firing past Alfie Whiteman.
Five minutes later, a cross from Keanan Bennetts was cut out with the ball falling to Kirby inside the box, but his half-volley went wide.
Roles also went close with a left-footed shot from 18 yards but Leicester scored again on 31 minutes when Barnes' drive from a tight angle on the right was parried by Whiteman into the path of the onrushing Mitchell, who gleefully slotted home.
We continued to battle, though, and pulled a goal back 10 minutes into the second half. Bennetts' corner dropped dangerously in the Foxes' area, skipper Christian Maghoma turned and tried a left-footed shot that was saved by Yates but Roles was alive to it and scored from the rebound.
Shortly afterwards, Bennetts' cut-back from the left found its way to Roles but his effort flew over the top.
However, the Foxes grabbed a crucial third goal six minutes from time when Barnes once again finished off a counter-attack and, with our lads unable to find a way back into the contest, the points stayed in Leicestershire.
