Leicester U18s 3-1 Spurs - John's reaction

18 November 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

John McDermott admitted he was concerned by the manner in which our Under-18s conceded all three goals at Leicester City at the weekend.

Defender Connor Ogilvie accidentally diverted the ball into his own net after a cross from the left to give the Foxes a 25th-minute lead – with Danny Rowe and Keenan King adding further to the hosts’ tally, both also converting crosses from the same area of the pitch.

Anthony Georgiou pulled one back for us with four minutes remaining, but a win for the home side never looked in doubt.

“We said before the match about both sides trying to impose their way upon the game and a lot of credit goes to Leicester for doing that and playing their game very well and very effectively,” said John, our Academy Manager.

“From our point of view I thought we made it too easy for them, but saying that I won’t take anything away from Leicester for their ability and their work rate to get to 3-0.

“Worryingly it was like three carbon copy goals that we conceded, so we spoke about that afterwards.

“That said, I thought Josh Onomah made a positive contribution throughout the game, so that was a plus point.”

John added that it’s important for the lads to regroup ahead of this weekend’s North London derby against Arsenal Under-18s.

“Now it’s a case of licking our wounds and starting again on Monday,” he added. “Most of the performances at Leicester were below par for the standards that we expect.”
