Leicester 1-6 Spurs - Mauricio's reaction

19 May 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino is almost running out of superlatives for the season and Harry Kane, but he settled for a ‘fantastic performance’ after a stunning 6-1 win at Leicester City on Thursday night.

Our 11th win in the last 12 matches further strengthened our position in second place in the Premier League with more records to add to the books.

Indeed, as soon as Heung-Min Son’s volley struck the back of net for 2-0 in the first half, he reached 20 goals in all competitions and this team became the first at Spurs to have three players score 20-plus goals in all competitions in a season. The closest we came previously was Bobby Smith (33), Les Allen (27), Cliff Jones (19) - plus Terry Dyson’s 17 - in the double-winning season of 1960-61.

This time around, Sonny (21) is joined by Dele Alli (21) and of course Harry Kane (32), who moved to the top of the Golden Boot goalscoring standings with four goals, taking him from 22 to 26 and two above Everton’s Romelu Lukaku with one match remaining. It was also Harry’s first four-goal haul.

Not surprisingly, this season is eclipsing all before it in the Premier League era (1992-93 onwards) and 6-1 is the Club’s highest away win in that era.

Mauricio said afterwards that the attitude of the team pleased him most. “The attitude was fantastic, the motivation which is our objective and we always ask the players to give their best - every single moment was fantastic on the pitch.

“Again, they made us very proud. It’s very good to finish the season in this way. Now we play another game (our final match at Hull on Sunday), but this was a fantastic performance.”

It looked like the players really meant it out there…
Mauricio: “I’m very pleased. In theory it was a difficult game but I think we managed it perfectly during the 90 minutes.”

What more can you say about Harry Kane?
Mauricio: “He’s fantastic, one of the best strikers. It’s difficult to find another word. It’s unbelievable what he’s doing and I’m so pleased for him. We all know he’s a great professional and he deserves all that happens.”

What about his hunger to keep going, to keep trying to score more goals right to the end?
Mauricio: “Yes and that’s important, to keep the motivation, to keep going, to fight. That is a good thing for us.”

Finally, how about our fans again?
Mauricio: “They are fantastic, I just say thank-you one more time. They were unbelievable.”
