Legends in seventh heaven!

The Spurs Legends team cruised to a 7-0 victory over a Keir Thompson XI in their first outing of 2014 at Haringey Borough FC on Sunday.

Andy Sinton was once again prolific in front of goal, helping himself to four during the match, while the scoring was completed by Darren Anderton, David Howells and a Danny Maddix penalty.

Chris Perry returned to the side to partner Stuart Nethercott at centre-half but, with the Legends enjoying the vast majority of possession, the hosts rarely troubled the back four.

Spurs were ahead inside three minutes as Clive Wilson sent Andy Sinton scurrying free behind the defence, the former England man sliding the ball nonchalantly past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Sinton hit the post moments later as the Legends’ energetic start continued, before Maddix was adjudged to have been felled in the area after both he and David Howells had seen shots blocked. Maddix dusted himself down and comfortably dispatched the spot kick to double his side’s lead with seven minutes on the watch.

Four minutes later it was 3-0 as Garry Brooke’s dummy from Wilson’s right wing cross allowed Sinton to rifle into the roof of the net.

Anderton got in on the act by bagging the Legends’ fourth on 19 minutes, scoring direct from a free-kick which had been awarded for handball 20 yards out.

Goalkeeper Gareth Howells caught a couple of menacing crosses into the Legends box as the game went on, before his brother David swept home the Legends’ fifth at the other end following Anderton’s cross.

Howells miscued an effort wide of the post after a fluid move involving Anderton and Sinton, while a long-range Anderton drive was kept out by a combination of the goalkeeper’s hands and the crossbar.

Sinton fired home from inside the box to complete his hat-trick in the 49th minute after neat interchanges with Mark Falco and Anderton, while the latter saw a looping effort saved by the keeper.

The Legends wanted a penalty for handball 18 minutes from time when Howells’ shot was blocked in the area, but there was nothing doing as far as the referee was concerned.

Two minutes later, though, the scoring was completed when Wilson’s ball into the six-yard box was only half cleared and Sinton powered home from 18 yards out.
