Legendary goalkeeper praises Andros

19 November 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

One of our former England internationals has given his backing to Andros Townsend as our wing wizard bids to earn a place in the Three Lions squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Former goalkeeper Ray Clemence, who was an established England international by the time he joined us from Liverpool in 1981, believes the 22-year-old is sensible enough to know that he must maintain his fantastic early-season form for both club and country if he’s to cement himself in Roy Hodgson’s travelling party for the 2014 showpiece.

Our young right-winger – the breakout star of England’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland last month – is set to start tonight’s friendly against Germany at Wembley, having appeared off the bench to a rousing reception against Chile on Friday.

And our legendary goalkeeper Ray, who made 330 appearances for us between 1981 and 1987 and helped us win the FA Cup in 1982 and UEFA Cup in 1984, reckons the foundations have been laid for Andros to push on to lofty heights.

“Andros has done fantastic in terms of where he was last season, being loaned out to different places,” said Ray, who was back at the Lane to watch our recent Premier League victory over Hull City. “All of a sudden Spurs have given him the opportunity and he’s taken it and then England have given him the opportunity and he was excellent in both games (last month in the World Cup qualifiers).

“He’s a very level headed boy and therefore he knows that, yes, things are going well but there’s a long time before the World Cup squad is picked so now he’s got to concentrate on staying in this Spurs team and continuing to play as well as he is doing in the team, and everything else will follow off the back of that.”
