Ledley's big step with U21s

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Ledley King has taken the next step to appearing in his second major finals.

Our outstanding defensive prospect was part of the England Under-21 side that beat Greece 2-1 at Blackburn on Friday night to book a place in November's two-leg play-offs for a place in next summer's European Championships.

Ledley was in fine form again alongside Gareth Barry at Ewood Park although he did concede a penalty in the final seconds.

Thankfully it mattered little as goals from Malcolm Christie and Jermain Defoe put England in the driving seat.

England will know on October 11 who their opponents will be in the play-offs - and boss David Platt believes there is enough quality in his squad to book a place in the finals next May - when, hopefully, Ledley's team-mates Anthony Gardner and Alton Thelwell might also come into the frame.

Platt said: "I said after the game against Holland that if we won our final three qualifying matches we would win the group.

"The focus before the Germany game was just on qualifying but now I've said to the squad when we met up this week that now we must focus on getting to the European Championship.

"We had two obstacles to overcome, we have managed to get pass one of those and now we have the play-offs.

"But with this squad, not just the first 11, we are more than capable of qualifying."

Ledley first caught the eye playing for England in the 2000 Euro Finals - when his excellent tournament ended in agony when he broke a bone in his foot in the last minute of the last game.
