Ledley King is suffering from tonsillitis and is a doubt for Sunday's FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers.
Our outstanding defensive prospect missed out on a potential first full cap for England against Holland on Wednesday night after withdrawing from the squad late on Tuesday.
It was reported that he had a sore throat but boss Glenn Hoddle revealed the full extent of Ledley's illness in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
"Ledley has tonsilitis and that was the reason he wasn't involved with England," said Glenn. "He's been put on antibiotics and he has to be a doubt for Sunday."
There was better news on Darren Anderton though. The midfielder also withdrew from the England squad on Monday after a slight hamstring problem flared up over the weekend.
"It had been niggling him for about 10 days, he aggravated it against Leicester and it was decided it wasn't worth the risk of playing for England," reported Glenn. "But he's responded well and will be okay for Sunday."
Christian Ziege may also come into the frame against Tranmere. He joined up with Germany this week but took no part in their 7-1 friendly win against Israel.
"He's back in full training and just needs to get his fitness levels higher now," added Glenn.
