Ledley welcomes Jan to Foundation's work

Club ambassador Ledley King introduced Jan Vertonghen to the work of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation recently, showing him around the half-term activities programme.

Dropping in on a football coaching session at White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre, Ledley pitted his wits against the Belgian defender, taking charge of opposite teams during a friendly match.

The half-term coaching programme is for young people aged 5-16 years old, offering free football and tennis sessions throughout the school holidays.

In addition to White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre, football sessions were also held at Northumberland Park Community School and the Ferry Lane Cruyff Court with tennis coaching at White Hart Lane Tennis Club.

Run by qualified Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coaches, the half-term programme is designed to help young people improve their sports skills while promoting the benefits of being healthy and active.

Ledley and Jan also passed on tips and advice to the young people attending, discussing their upbringings and professional careers.

Jan said: “It’s so important to get kids off the street by providing somewhere where they can come and play sport and have fun with their friends. You can see by the smiles on their faces how delighted they are to have this kind of opportunity.

“I loved getting involved and when Ledley and I were coaching, you saw the kids giving their all which was great as that’s what we’re here to do, provide inspiration.

“Sometimes the kids don’t have the opportunity to play for a club and that’s why it’s important they have the opportunity to come and play here.

“It’s great that the Foundation is providing these opportunities during the school holidays and if I was a kid and I lived locally then I would definitely come along!”

Ledley added “The holidays are an important time for kids. A lot of them can be left scratching their heads at what to do over the period of time they aren’t at school, so the more opportunities we give them to engage with other kids the better.

“There has always been a good turn out and I’m pleased the kids are enjoying themselves and keep coming back. We have great staff here, easy to talk to, mentors to the kids.

“It’s nice to give the kids a treat once in a while. I always look back to when I was a kid and I never really had an opportunity to meet players like this. To be able to meet one of their heroes, spend time with them and ask them questions is great for the kids.”
