Ledley kicks-off league's 'Back The Bid' campaign
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Ledley King was at the forefront as the Premier League announced its support for London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics.
The league launched a marketing campaign on Friday that will be seen by hundreds of millions of football fans throughout the world.
The campaign was kicked off at White Hart Lane where Ledley was joined by Rt Hon Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Sebastian Coe, London 2012 Chairman and Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore.
At 110 matches across all 20 Premier League clubs there will be perimeter boards and programme advertising to promote the bid for the remainder of the season.
In addition the official Premier League website, premierleague.com, will also feature London 2012 advertising and editorial content.
New Spurs skipper and England star Ledley said: “Sport is a big part of the make up of Britain and hosting the Olympics would be a tremendous event for the whole country, not just London, I remember Euro ’96 and what an impact
“Watching our athletes compete in Athens you could feel the pride the country took in their performances. I know how passionate our sports fans are from playing in packed football grounds every week - imagine what it would be like to host the Olympics and how the public would react to that.”
Tessa Jowell, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, said: "We are determined to win the right to stage the Olympics and Paralympics in Britain in 2012 but we need to show the International Olympic Committee how much we want the Games. This campaign by the Premier League will send a message to the world that sport in Britain is right behind London 2012. We are bidding because we are proud of our country and confident of our ability. I believe that London can host the greatest Games ever."
Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore, said: “Everyone involved at the Premier League and the clubs believes in London 2012 and wants to support and promote the bid in the best way we can.
“Our games are now screened in 195 countries with a global home reach of over 600 million. People all over the world recognise the positive influence of the Premier League and will realise the significance of us backing London 2012.
“The Premier League attracts some of the best players from all over the world and hopefully this marketing push will help us see the world’s finest athletes here in 2012.”
Chairman of London 2012, Sebastian Coe, said: “We are really delighted to receive the full backing and support of the Premier League and all 20 Premiership clubs. Together with Tessa Jowell we fully appreciate the efforts that are being made to back the Bid at football grounds up and down the country. This is a great boost to the Bid both nationally and internationally. The English Premiership is shown worldwide and is a great example of Britain’s passion for sport that is shared by so many people in every corner of the globe.
