Ledley joins youngsters on War Memorial visit

In the lead up to our Football Remembers match this weekend, Ledley King joined pupils from St Paul and All Hallows School and representatives of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation in a visit to the World War One memorial at Tottenham Cemetery.

As part of an educational session hosted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), the children learned about the 14 Tottenham Hotspur players who fought and died during the First World War, including the story of Walter Tull – the first black outfield player to ever play professional football in England and the first British-born black combat officer in the British Army.

Ledley and the pupils spent time using the high-tech information panel at Tottenham Cemetery which goes into detail about Walter Tull, before taking part in a question and answer activity to find out why football played such an important role during World War One.

Football Remembers is a collaboration between the Premier League, The FA, the Football League and British Council to mark the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War – the 1914 Christmas Truce football match. Football Remembers will see the delivery of a week of activities that will engage and educate football fans about the Christmas Truce football match that took place on Christmas Day 1914 in Flanders, Belgium.

Speaking at the memorial, Ledley said: “It’s important to remember those people who bravely fought for us during the First World War. Figures like Walter Tull are an inspiration and should be remembered, as should significant moments like the Christmas Truce match which we will be marking this weekend at our Football Remembers game.”

On December 13, six young people from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s local Kicks project will travel to Belgium to take part in the Premier League’s Christmas Truce Tournament in Ypres, Belgium. Held annually since 2011, the Christmas Truce Tournament recognises the role of professional footballers in the First World War and commemorates their sacrifices.
