Ledley King was greeted with a roar of excitement when he visited Lancasterian Primary School in Tottenham to open the school’s new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) named after him.
The outdoor sports facility, dubbed the ‘Ledley King MUGA’, was installed at the school to help improve pupils’ physical education and recreational needs and is shared with students at the Vale Resource Base which caters for children with physical disabilities and special needs.
Ledley took part in a Q&A session with the children before officially opening the new installation in a ribbon cutting ceremony. Once the MUGA was declared ‘open’ children took to the pitch to play a five-a-side game with Ledley as the referee.
The school has long considered Ledley as a sporting legend and inspiration to all of its pupils - both the Sports Hall and MUGA are named after our Club Ambassador and legendary former captain.
Speaking about opening the new MUGA, Ledley said: “Thanks to the children and staff at Lancasterian School for making me feel so welcome. It’s an honour that the school has named their new games area after me and I hope that the children here enjoy these great facilities for many years to come.”
Tottenham Hotspur Foundation works closely with Lancasterian as part of its Primary School provision, delivering sports sessions to pupils each week, and has already been making full use of the new facilities.
Alison Maynard, Headteacher at Lancasterian School, said: “Lancasterian Primary School and The Vale were proud to welcome Ledley King to open our new MUGA.
“Being a Tottenham Hotspur legend and having already named the school gym after him in 2013, many of our pupils were aware of his incredible accomplishments and were very excited when he arrived.
“It was an amazing experience for the Lancasterian and Vale community and the impact can be summed up in a comment I overheard a year six pupil making to Ledley: ‘You have really inspired me today in what you have said about sportsmanship, working hard and persevering so you can achieve your ambitions.’ On behalf of everyone at Lancasterian and The Vale, thank you so much Ledley.”
