Learning curve for Winks

11 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Winks says he’s noticed the difference both physically and mentally since he’s been working with our first team squad.

The 19-year-old midfielder has frequently been named on the bench this season, having been a regular for our Under-21s in 2014-15.

Training with the group on a regular basis, he says the step up to senior reckoning cannot be understated, but he confirms he’s embracing the challenge.

“You have to be mentally a lot stronger, physically a lot stronger at the top level,” he said.

“The games are quick, there is more room for error and if you make a mistake, you are likely to get punished.

“This is what you want though, these tests. You don’t want it to be easy, safe and in the comfort zone. You relish the test and I’m loving every minute of it.”

A host of our Academy graduates have emerged onto the first team scene in the last couple of years and Harry says that can only inspire the next crop of youngsters as they bid to break through.

“We all believe in ourselves, we all believe we are good enough and when the Head Coach shows faith in us and as young players it’s fantastic,” he added.

“Seeing people like Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Andros Townsend and Harry Kane – players who played in the Academy and now play regularly for the first team – gives us all hope that we can get there as well if we keep working hard and applying ourselves in the right way.”
