Learning curve for kids
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Pat Holland is hoping his disappointed youngsters take something out of adversity after their FA Youth Cup exit at Stockport County on Wednesday night.
County came out all guns blazing and despite an improvement after the break we couldn’t recover from going 2-0 down in the first half.
Boss Pat insists it’s all part of the learning curve for what was mainly an Under-17 side in an Under-18 competition.
He said: “Everyone is disappointed and the lads have now got a four-hour journey home to think about it. But it’s what you get out of it. They will have a few of these games if they make it.
“We’ve told them a few home truths. They are kids but it is a man’s game and you are out there earning a living. You have to say ‘I’m going to be better than the bloke I’m up against’. Let’s hope they do something about it.”
County’s aerial threat caused all the problems as they went 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and could have scored more in a one-sided first half.
But we improved after the break, Jimmy Lee curled in a free-kick for 2-1 and we caused a few heart-stopping moments for the home side before the final whistle.
“I thought we were disappointing in the first half,” added Pat. “We played a 4-3-3 formation and never got to grips with it.
“We changed to 4-4-2 in the second half, played better, got the deserved goal and we were then hoping we could nick another and take them back to White Hart Lane.
“Jimmy Neighbour made a point afterwards that Stockport are playing in an Under-18 league week in, week out, whereas we’re just getting together for these games. That’s not to make excuses but you have to weigh that side of it up.
“We played how we should have played in the second half but the first half was disappointing.
“As I said to them, if you are going to be a player, you have learn to compete. It’s a part of the game a lot of kids don’t realise. This is the physical side of the game, sides are up for it and you have to compete with that.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
