Lady luck shines on Doc
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Gary Doherty gladly accepted the slice of luck that kept Ireland's Euro 2004 qualifying hopes alive at the weekend.
Our versatile defender was thrown up front as a substitute in the final half-hour of Saturday's qualifying match against Albania and it was his cross-shot that led to an own goal and a vital 2-1 win in injury time.
It was the second time in three Euro 2004 qualifiers that 'Doc' had struck late to clinch crucial points for his country.
Our players were heavily involved in Ireland's victory - Robbie Keane scored the first and Stephen Carr set up both.
"There was a lot of luck involved," admitted Gary of the winner. "It was a left-foot shot and I just had a swing at it. But frankly, it's gone in and it was a great three points for us.
"It was frustrating because we were in control and their keeper pulled off a few good saves. We persevered, went to the end and it was great fighting spirit from the lads.
"It will be a massive confidence booster and we'll all looking forward to Wednesday now."
The Spurs trio - plus assistant boss Chris Hughton - face Georgia at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday.
