Ladies overcome Os test to reach Capital Cup semi-final

22 November 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Ladies maintained their unbeaten run this season to move into the semi-finals of the Capital Women's Senior Cup on Sunday.

They made it 14 wins and a draw from their 15 matches in all competitions with a hard-earned 2-0 victory against Leyton Orient in Sunday's quarter-final.

Spurs were runners-up in the competition - run by London, Middlesex and the Amateur Football Association (AFA) - last season and determined to go one better this time around.

Goals from Renee Hector and Wendy Martin accounted for a spirited Orient at Mile End Stadium and Spurs will now play either Crystal Palace or Camden Town in the semi-final scheduled for next February. Charlton face Actonians in the second semi-final.

Spurs Ladies’ passage into the semi-finals of the Capital Women’s Senior Cup came under threat from a battling Leyton Orient outfit, however Karen Hills’ Lilywhites overcame that test with tremendous character in a 2-0 win at Mile End Stadium.

Sophie Mclean took up a central position 18 yards from goal playing a splitting pass through to Wendy Martin who was taken down by Francesca Cagetti’s heavy challenge, but the call for a penalty was waved away.

Eartha Pond drifted into space out on the left flank looping a pass towards Nikita Whinnett whose diagonal run across goal saw her place a volley past the post. Pond’s beautifully constructed corner allowed Cheryl Williams to gather possession without pressure, though from the edge of the area fired a low strike off the post.

Williams’ intelligent free-kick played Pond down the inside left channel and her cross looking for Martin was touched away by the outstretched Vanessa Wilson from six-yards. Sophie Le Marchand broke away at the other end into the box, but Jenna Schillaci was able to steal possession away at the crucial moment.

Pond’s ball over the top was latched onto by Martin whose half-volley went wide of Naomi Ogunde’s left-hand post. Mclean’s teasing pass finding Martin inside the area saw Cagetti clear on the stretch. Williams’ corner to the near-post was flicked-on by Whinnett towards Lucia Leon who guided the ball home, only for the linesman to call for an offside. A matter of inches separated Spurs from taking the lead before the break. Pond’s cross found Josie Green whose bursting run into the box saw her dipper go wide of the post. Martin then sliced her toe-poked attempt from Pond’s byline cut back agonisingly wide.

Leon and Whinnett combined for Riana Soobadoo whose looped attempt was denied by Ogunde. Pond was played down the left by Whinnett whose cross was guided into the path of Williams by Soobadoo, but she dragged wide.

The breakthrough came on 56 minutes, Schillaci’s corner was headed away only as far as Renee Hector who rifled a strike back towards the top corner. Hector blocked Jasmine Campbell’s close-range effort as the ball fell to Belen Ripoll Douton who fired over.

Le Marchand led a counter finding Campbell inside whose lay-off saw Lydia Cooper poke inches wide. Ogunde kept out Bianca Baptiste’s 25-yard ferocious drive, before keeping out Martin’s well-struck near-post effort.

Hector’s glorious pass over the top was sweetly struck on the volley from Baptiste cutting inside who guided wide. Schillaci’s excellent positioning saw her stop Le Marchand threading Ella Meadowcroft through on goal.

Martin sealed progression at the death, Baptiste’s strike was blocked by Cagetti, though as the ball came back to her she slipped Martin through who placed across Ogunde into the far corner.
