Karen Hills was left to reflect on a positive night for Spurs Ladies – regardless of losing out in the Ryman Ladies Cup Final.
Legendary former skipper Gary Mabbutt and midfielder Micky Hazard were amongst a packed crowd at Ware FC’s Wodson Park to witness a thrilling final against Charlton.
Spurs enjoyed the territorial advantage and created more chances but were trailing to Kit Graham’s first half cracker before a last-gasp equaliser from Leah Rawle took the game into extra time.
The team was then rocked again by another fine strike from Graham and there was no comeback this time as Rosie Kmita struck the post in the second half of extra time but Charlton held firm.
“It was an even game that came down to the final details,” said Karen. “Credit to Charlton, Kit Graham scored two great goals and that has won it for them.
“We came back into the game right at the end of normal time and that gave us a new lease of life going into extra time so to then go 2-1 down was a real blow.
“I’m proud of the players. We showed heart and passion throughout. We were determined to put on a good show and we achieved that, it’s just unfortunate the result has gone against us.
“We’re all disappointed but we’ll pick ourselves up from here. It’s always tough to lose a final but I’m sure we'll will come back stronger for it.
“It was a fantastic night with so many fans turning out and we’ve done the club proud. We gave everything.”
