Tottenham Ladies revert to plan one this weekend — promotion from the Greater London Ladies League.
All the old clichés about cup progress being a bonus were perfectly valid for Spurs Ladies as they target the GLLL Premier Division championship — their only route to climb the ladies football ladder.
But they need not worry about distractions anymore after they were dumped out the prestigious AXA FA Women’s Cup 6-2 at Gillingham on Saturday.
In a match played in very heavy conditions, Spurs simply held up their hands and admitted: “We were beaten by a very good side.”
After early scares Gillingham went ahead in the 26th minute with a rather fortuitous goal when the ball pinged around the six yard box like a pinball and cannoned into the net of an unfortunate defender giving keeper Helen Wilson no chance. It would be a busy afternoon for Wilson (pictured).
Prolific Rebecca Lewis gave Spurs hope in the 37th minute when she ran on to a through pass from skipper Jackie Fearon, outpaced the defender before shooting past the keeper.
Unfortunately they then fell to the sucker punch and two minutes later Gillingham had scored their second from a similar type of move.
Things went from bad to worse in the 41st minute when Gillingham scored their third after a defensive mix up in the area saw us caught in possession.
Just before half-time a low cross from the Spurs defensive left hand side evaded keeper Wilson and the Gillingham forward crashed the ball into the net to make the half-time score 4-1 to the home side.
Tottenham replaced flu victim Katy D'Agostino with Katie Jones at the start of the second half but within two minutes Gillingham made it 5-1 when the ball evaded keeper Wilson and was bundled into the net from close range.
On 73 minutes Tottenham pulled a second goal back through Lewis, who ran through on her own before drawing the keeper and shooting into the net.
Before the re-start Spurs made a double substitution replacing Michelle Oliver with Lucy Pinnock and allowing substitute keeper Charlotte Kao a run out in place of Helen Wilson.
The scoring was completed on 81 minutes when replacement keeper Kao caught in two minds over a possible back pass missed her kick and the ball rolled into the net.
Spokeswoman Kay Lovelock insisted: “With the FA Cup campaign now over for another season we can now concentrate on the league, honest!
“The cup games this season were always going to be our bonus and if this is our usual one really bad performance now out of our system we won't be too disappointed.
“Our aim still remains to win the League and progress to the play-offs, where we could meet Gillingham. If that happens we will certainly hope to show them what Tottenham Hotspur Ladies are really capable of.”
Spurs now get back on the league trail with a trip to Redbridge Raiders on Sunday.
Spurs Ladies: Wilson, Broderick, Wiggen, Sheals, D’Agostino, Oliver, Fearon, Blackmore, Schillaci, Johnson, Lewis. Subs: Jones, Pinnock, Kao.
The reserves home game against Chelsea Reserves was abandoned at half-time because of the wet conditions.
The youth teams had mixed fortunes in the London County Youth Cup.
The Under-13s lost 9-0 away to very good Kent Magpies team and the Under-15s won at home in very tough conditions against Crystal Palace by 11-0.
The scorers for the Under-15s were Samantha Farnum 4, Sherry Goodchild 2, Meroulla Lazarou 2, Katie Jackson 1, Stephanie Cooper 1, and Laura Cox 1.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
