Ladies back on track

Spurs Ladies are back on track after a tough week in the FA Women's Premier League.

The team launched into the new campaign with six wins out of six including four in the league to top the Southern Division of the FAWPL for the first time.

But their perfect start was halted by successive defeats against then-leaders Cardiff and West Ham in the space of four days last week.

They were determined to respond against Pompey - top before the weekend's games - on Sunday and did just that with a 1-1 draw at Ware FC.

Lucia Padilla opened the scoring with a belter in the first half only for Pompey to force an own goal to level it late on.

Nevertheless, with three cup fixtures approaching, manager Karen Hills was delighted to get back on track.

"We didn't start particularly well against Portsmouth but Lucia scored a great goal, jinking between two defenders before curling home with her left foot and you could see the confidence return," said Karen.

"There were few chances after that but they forced an own goal that we could do little about. Avilla Bergin played well and Jenna Schillaci was outstanding at left-back, nullifying arguably their best player.

"A draw was a fair result and a good result for us after a tough week. There were a lot of positives to be taken out of it."

The ladies now face a stern test on the road in the FAWPL Cup at Sheffeld FC Ladies on Sunday - Sheffield top the Northern Division of the FAWPL with six wins in eight.
