King for a week - young Spurs doing us proud

14 October 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

The final part of our special ‘King for a Week’ series brings us to the current day and Ledley’s views on the class of 2015.

Needless to say, as a player who came through the ranks from schoolboy to Academy graduate to professional and eventually captain, Ledley welcomes with open arms the current crop of players following in his footsteps.

Harry Kane, Nabil Bentaleb, Tom Carroll, Danny Rose, Harry Winks, Andros Townsend and Ryan Mason are all Academy graduates to have played for the first team this season, while Josh Onomah and goalkeeper Luke McGee are squad regulars.

Add the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Heung-Min Son, Clinton Njie, Kevin Wimmer, Ben Davies and Christian Eriksen - all aged 23 and under - and you see a young squad determined to drive the club forward this season under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino.

“I enjoyed coming through the Academy and it’s important for clubs to have home-grown players, players with whom fans can really associate,” said Ledley, who made his debut in 1999 and went on to make 321 appearances in all competitions before injury forced his retirement.

“Luckily enough, we have a number of those players at the moment and they are top players as well, hopefully they will lead the club to glory.

“The young lads are doing the club proud at the moment and it’s always pleasing to see that.”
