King for a week - Ledley's case for defence

10 October 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Part three of our special mini-series sees Ledley King take a look at our defence – and he likes what he sees.

You’d expect one of our all-time great defenders to keep a close eye on all matters at the back and he believes the settled nature of central defensive pairing Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen has provided the platform for a solid start in the Premier League.

Indeed, after eight games, we’ve conceded just seven goals, joint-best in the league.

“I’ve been really impressed,” said Ledley, who graced the club with 321 appearances over a 13-year career in the first team, most as captain and centre-back.

“It’s the first time in a while we have a really seen a settled centre-back pairing, Jan and Toby know each other well and you can see that in their performances.

“The relationship the two centre-halves have makes it easier for them and the rest of the back four. We’ve been settled and we’ve reaped the rewards.

“It’s not just the two centre-halves though, the full-backs have been very impressive and Eric Dier in front as well. I’ve been impressed with the defensive shape of the team. Eric has been outstanding.”

And not forgetting Hugo Lloris, who Ledley admits he would have loved to have played alongside!

“What a great goalkeeper to have there when teams get through the defence,” said Ledley. “He’s one of the best keepers in Europe and I would have loved to have played alongside him myself. It’s a great defensive unit plus Hugo and Eric in front. We’ve started well."
