Key battle: Kasey Keller on Lloris v Schmeichel

28 October 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Kasper Schmeichel played a huge role in Leicester City's title win last season. Hugo Lloris remains one of the best goalkeepers in world football. The pair meet again at the Lane on Saturday. Imagine if there was a goalkeeper who used to play for Spurs and the Foxes and is now a top pundit....

A 'complete performance'

Kasey: "The fact they were priced 5,000-1 before the start of the season, that sort of speaks for itself. It was one of the most remarkable runs in the history of sport. At the beginning, they were finding ways to outscore their opponents and in the second half of the season, it was all about grinding out results. They scored a lot of goals, they were tidy at the back, it was a complete performance."

The right fit

Kasey: "There is no question that the form of Kasper Schmeichel was a huge contributing factor in Leicester’s title. You don’t keep that many clean sheets and keep your team in that many games if you are having a bad season. Kasper was always in his father’s (Peter, Manchester United) shadow. He bounced around the lower leagues and you were wandering is this a real, top-class goalkeeper? Of course, we’ve seen it before, goalkeepers need that little more experience before they get to the top level. Kasper paid his dues and has truly become one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. It’s a different scenario for different goalkeepers, being the right fit - and Kasper has found that at Leicester.

Kasey on Hugo

Kasey: "He’s definitely right up there. What you look at is a group of guys at the top of the game - and Hugo is definitely up there - and at any given time, any one of them is arguably the best goalkeeper at that point. There could be a time if you are playing for Bayern Munich where you don’t have a lot to do. It’s great to see when a guy is having a run of form where you just say ‘wow’ and there is no doubt Hugo is one of those guys. He’s makes the difference. You are looking at a goalkeeper who makes saves that win a game, win a point and he does that week in, week out."

Key saves at key times

Kasey: "Sometimes you’ll go out and win a game 3-0, but you’ll forget that the goalkeeper made a huge save at 0-0 or 1-0 that completely changed the outcome of the game. What would have happened without that big save at 1-0? It’s about key saves at key moments and that makes a huge difference."

On Saturday’s game

Kasey: "It will be interesting. Spurs are still unbeaten, Leicester haven’t had the start they had last season - to be fair, that would be difficult to replicate. Leicester’s Champions League form has been great. I think I’m looking at a draw...but having said that, it’s at White Hart Lane, so I’ll say Spurs will just nick it."

What Kasey’s up to...

"I’m travelling a lot around the US broadcasting with ESPN, it’s busy, it’s good. I also do the local broadcasts for the Seattle Sounders. It’s a lot of fun."
