KELLY'S EYE FOR GOAL

Stephen Kelly's smile was as wide as the River Liffey as he celebrated another spectacular goal for the reserves earlier this week.

Stephen Kelly's smile was as wide as the River Liffey as he celebrated another spectacular goal for the reserves earlier this week.

The Republic of Ireland international full-back bagged the opener in the 2-0 win against Portsmouth at Stevenage on Monday exactly a month after smashing in a 35-yarder against Charlton.

This time ‘Steo’ picked up the ball in our half, sped past three Pompey players, played a one-two with Andy Reid on the edge of the area, picked up the return, skipped around the keeper and slid home from a tight angle. Reidy clinched the win with the second goal just a minute from time to send Clive Allen’s squad 12 points clear at the top of the Barclays Reserve League South.

"That's two in my last two!" beamed Steo. "It's great to score another goal and I felt I took it well.

"It all started in our half, I took it forward, played a little one-two with Reidy, got around the keeper and slotted it, great!

"It was a good goal and I was very happy with it.

"I've always worked hard on trying to get myself forward into good areas and trying to create opportunities.

"It's a good thing to have that ability going forward, the defending is the main part of the role but if you offer something else to the team that's great."

Stephen reiterated the desire of the first team squad members to make a contribution in what is turning into a season to remember for the reserves.

"We all want to win these games," he added. "We know we're closing in on the title and it’s a long time (1995) since we won it, so if we managed to do so it will be quite an achievement.

"It's great for all the lads that have been involved week in, week out and for the lads who come in from the first team."
