Stephen Kelly was naturally thrilled to score the first senior goal of his career against Birmingham at St Andrews on Saturday.
The Republic of Ireland under-21 skipper started the game on the bench before getting an early opportunity to make his mark following a first half injury to Noe Pamarot.
He seized his chance and, in doing so, added his name to the goalscoring charts just before the hour mark when brilliant vision from Michael Carrick enabled the full-back to sneak in behind the Birmingham lines and drill a low shot across Maik Taylor and into the bottom corner of the net.
"It was my first goal for the team and I was obviously delighted to get on the first place," reflected Steo. "It was unfortunate what happened to Noe but I came on and hopefully did well in the game.
"It was great to get the goal, fantastic, but ending up with a draw was disappointing. We went there and were positive and really looked like we were going to win the game. I thought we played well, created chances and could have got the win."
Martin Jol has demanded more end product from the attacking sorties of the young Irishman and he admitted not thinking about it too much could have been key to his success on this occasion.
"I make the runs forward so often and sometimes end up not getting the ball but creating space for other people. I called for Michael to play it to me and first of all was concentrating on getting the ball down in front of me. As it dropped I just tried to keep it low and managed to do it.
"I didn't want to think about it too much because when you try to do things more naturally they tend to come off better. I took it in my stride and let it go.
"It is hard to describe the emotion, a fantastic feeling. You get a buzz about yourself and become more confident as the game goes on."
