Keeping options open
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Kasey Keller says goalkeepers must now contemplate three options when confronted with a penalty - left, right or simply stand up.
The American keeper must now wish he had stuck more firmly with the latter option as Lauren's kick for Arsenal on Saturday trickled right down the middle.
Kasey did reveal that staying put was an option he was certainly considering ahead of the kick and moved to his left feeling he was leaving the possibility of staying on his feet.
"I did when I saved the first penalty against Korea in the Gold Cup, I stood up and he hit it right up the middle.
"I was actually thinking, defender, he's gonna hit it up the middle. I expected him to hit it with a bit more pace so I kind of moved a little bit, leaving the possibility if he hit it up the middle.
"He hit it so slow, I just couldn't stop my body from moving left.
"It is no more just a chance of it going one side or the other - it's definitely a case of choosing from three ways now.
"Out of the last eight penalties I've come up against at least three or four have come up the middle. That's another option we have to look at."
In describing Lauren's penalty taking style, Kasey exploited the American vocabulary to the full.
"That was the shankiest penalty I've ever faced," he smiled. "I think if he'd have hit it harder I would have got it with my feet. Because he hit is so slow I just couldn't stop my body - I think I've hurt my shoulder trying to stop myself in the air if that's at all possible.
"If somebody smashes a worldie from 25 into the upper corner you can all hold your hand up but, in those circumstances, it makes it hard to swallow.
"I thought I had it. I tried to stop myself as much as possible - a quarter of an inch probably, my foot was away from that ball. Unfortunately, those are the breaks you get when you are at the top.
