Hans Segers concludes his assessment of how our goalkeepers shaped up last season with Robert Burch and Nicky Eyre.
It would be fair to say frustration was the name of the game for both youngsters as injuries held back Burchy's progress and game time was limited for Nicky with the likes of Radek Cerny, Marton Fulop and Burchy ahead of him in terms of reserve team football. He was released at the end of the season.
"It’s been tough for Burchy," reflected coach Hans. "At the start of the season we brought in a young international in Marton Fulop and a combination of that and one or two injuries has seen Burchy go from number two to number four.
"He’s almost missed the season through injury but that’s football. I’ve been out for six, nine months myself and it’s a battle. Football doesn’t come easy.
"I’ve told Burchy he’ll have ups and downs throughout his career and he has to take this season as a learning process because people will look to see how he comes out of it.
"Is he mentally strong? Can he handle the pressure? Can you handle making mistakes and certain setbacks? If you can, you can become a good goalkeeper."
Although he was released, Hans was still positive on Nicky's performances last term.
"Nicky started the season very strong and I told him at the time, from a boy, he looked like a man in goal — much more mature and experienced.
"You could see fear in his eyes before but he was confident and as soon as he made the step into the reserves, he did well.
"But he has four goalkeepers in front of him and that’s the problem.
"I told him to keep grafting day in, day out and you never know what’s around the corner and about two weeks later he was sitting on the bench in the first team at Crystal Palace.
"All the work he put in over the years paid off for him to be sitting there because if he wasn’t good enough, there was no way we would have picked him.
"That was pleasing as a coach because you want to see these keepers improve.
"The club has decided not to take him on simply because we have to look at his age, his ability and decide if he can go into our first team. That’s why we made that decision but there is no reason why he can’t go somewhere else and earn a living out of the game. I'm sure he will."
