Keane tips Defoe call-up

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Robbie Keane is backing his strike partner Jermain Defoe to receive an England call-up for Euro 2004.

While many of the nations' footballers are now set to board planes for a summer break in the sun, Robbie feels our January recruit from West Ham should be packing his bags for Portugal.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson is set to name his provisional squad today and the 21-year-old is in competition for four or five striking berths with the likes of Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney, Darius Vassell, Alan Smith and James Beattie.

Jermain has netted 22 goals this season - seven since arriving at Spurs - and Robbie insists his prodigious talent for finding the net deserves exposure on the big international stage.

"For me, 100 per cent definitely," he said. "His record speaks for itself, Jermain is a goalscorer and will always score goals no matter where he plays.

"He is one of those people that just has that knack, even if he were to come off the bench he will always nick a goal for you. He has done brilliantly, even though he played half a season in the first division, he has done well and will always score goals.

"It is not a big step up for him and he is well able to take it on his shoulders. I get on well with Jermain, he is a good lad and I would love to see him go there."

Robbie added that the addition of Jermain to Eriksson's Portugal pool of strikers would offer the coach a style option he has not enjoyed before.

"He is different, there may be some similarities with Michael, but he is a typical goal poacher and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't go."
