Kasey the Reading Champion

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Premier League Reading Stars is a national initiative that operates through a network of Premier League Clubs and public libraries. Drawing on the expertise of the National Literacy Trust, each of the Premier League Teams has nominated a 'Reading Champion' to discuss his reading habits and choose his favourite book.

American International Kasey Keller has taken up the post of Reading Champion for Spurs for the second year running. This year we are hosting reading sessions with three public libraries. Marcus Garvey, Wood Green Central and Coombes Croft Library will be hosting reading clubs based on the book choices of all 20 Premiership reading Champions.

The children taking part receive free goodies from the Football Foundation and the Premier League. They also receive three free books to start their own library, funded by the Arts Council of England.

PLRS focuses on family literacy, encouraging parents to read with their children. It is designed to use the power of the Premier League and the clubs and players, as a motivational tool to encourage children and adults to read.

One of the aims of the PLRS is to create lifelong readers, excited by the attraction of football, who will discover a love of reading through exposure to books recommended by their heroes. Another is to raise awareness in the community of the recourses available to them at their local library.

Saturday March 27 saw Wood Green Central library play host to the launch of the Spurs Reading Stars project. The children had a special video message from their Reading Champion Kasey Keller. Kasey told them about his favourite book without giving too much away:

"I enjoy reading storybooks like my chosen Reading Stars book. Reading stories like Jack London’s Call of the Wild is exciting and you can’t put it down until find out what happens!"

Kasey is a great supporter of the project and is really happy to be the Spurs Reading Champion. He said:
"The importance of reading, particularly for children, should never be underestimated and any scheme that promotes reading should be applauded. This scheme was a great success last year and I'm sure it will have an even greater impact this year."

The launch also saw a visit from Chirpy the Spurs mascot who loves reading himself. Chirpy was on hand to launch a short story competition to all the children taking part.
