Kasey on the keeper

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Kasey Keller knows better than most that his former club Leicester have something of a knack of grooming good goalkeepers - and the team are charged with the task of beating one of them on Sunday.

West Brom keeper Russell Hoult is earning rave reviews at the Hawthorns since keeping 26 clean sheets to help the Albion gain promotion to the Premiership. Reports suggest that his performance levels have not dipped at the higher level and he is mentioned in some quarters as a possible England candidate.

It all started for the 31-year-old at Leicester although, unlike Foxes legends Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, Hoult has taken a slightly longer route to the top.

After spending nearly four years at Filbert Street, Hoult enjoyed a number of loan spells before signing on for Derby in 1995. A short spell at Portsmouth followed before joining West Brom in March 2000.

So what is it about Leicester and goalkeepers?

"I think it stems back from Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton and has gone on from there," pondered Kasey.

"Russell kept a lot of clean sheets last season and has brought that form with him into the Premiership. Obviously he's not going to have the same number as he did last year, but he's had a very good start to the season.

"He was gone before I got to Leicester, but I ran into him at Derby and a few other places."

Goalkeepers are hardly off the back pages at the moment and a few minds are being exercised as to exactly who David Seaman's successor as England keeper should be. Kasey reasons that this is why goalkeepers are so much in the spotlight.

"I think it happened a few years ago when Shilton was stepping down. Whenever someone has been in that role for a long time people are always trying to figure out who is going to be next to take it on.

"David Seaman has had the shirt for quite a few years and people are wondering who is going to be next. It's a difficult job.

"Russell's a very good goalkeeper, but it's not up to me."
