Kasey Keller believes that this World Cup proves that the European and South American nations will no longer have it all their own way in major tournaments.
As if to prove his point, champions France became the World Cup's biggest casualty on Tuesday, having lost to African Nations runners-up Senegal in their opening game. Uruguay also fell by the wayside.
Poland are out of the competition, comprehensively beaten by South Korea. The USA shocked Portugal in their opening game. Japan beat Russia, Mexico are going well and Kasey feels these previously unheralded football countries are making up ground.
"What is catching the eye is how the rest of the world is really catching up with Europe and South America," stated Kasey.
"Concacaf, which really in the past has provided the World Cup whipping boys, have won their games. Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States have won games and Korea won for the first time in their history. They have always been the Asian whipping boys."
Kasey continues that the African nations laid down their marker in previous World Cups, but could now be ready to really slug it out with the traditional stronghold.
"Africa! Senegal beat France in their opening game... They kind of emerged some time ago, the African teams, but it's still showing that no longer can the Europeans and South Americans go into a World Cup and just be fighting it out with each other."
