Chris Hughton said that gaining reward during periods of sustained pressure was key for the team in the 4-1 victory over Birmingham on Wednesday night.
The first team coach pointed to the recent single goal defeat to Charlton where, despite a promising first half display, the goal did not come and the visitors headed off with the points.
There was little chance of that this time around at the Lane, where spells of dominance were marked with goals - two from Stephane Dalmat and one each from Simon Davies and Robbie Keane. Goals, Chris agrees, certainly have a galvanising effect on performances.
"Yes, because I think there is always a little bit of apprehension, Birmingham are a good side and a tough side to play against," he reasoned. "You look back at that Charlton game where we played well in the first half but didn't score - that was the difference here.
"In the periods we played well we had the goals to go with it and it does relieve a certain amount of pressure."
Chris added, naturally, that the main objective of the evening was the securing of a much-needed three points to push us a couple of places up the Premiership table.
"More because it was a home game, no disrespect to Birmingham but, when you look at games you should win, this was one. We needed the points and we've got difficult games coming up, away to Leeds and home to Liverpool, who have just beaten Chelsea.
"This was an opportunity and we knew it."
