Juniors head for Germany

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

A Spurs under-16 squad depart for Montabaur in Germany on Friday to take part in the Keramik Cup indoor 5-a-side tournament.

A group of 13 boys will travel with youth coaches Michael Stone, Pat Holland and Terry Harvey and will play a minimum of six games across Saturday and Sunday.

"It will be a very enjoyable tournament," said Michael Stone. "We are in groups and then it goes to a knock-out phase."

Each game is 15 minutes in duration and among the teams competing for Keramik Cup are VFB Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, FC Copenhagen and Slavia Prague.

"We are very much looking forward to it," said Stone. "It will be a great experience for our under-16s, especially those who joining the club full-time next season, It is a great chance for them to bond and get together with the group in readiness for next season. Whatever happens in the tournament, they should learn a lot from playing against that quality of opposition.

"They will also learn much from playing a different type of football, one that the German teams are very used to playing. We’re not, so we’ve been training indoors for the past few days on the indoor courts at White Hart Lane to prepare.

"The group is very open to the new ideas we have given them to take forward to the tournament."

Stone does not believe the team will be at too much of a disadvantage technique-wise, even if the small sided game would appear to suit the style of teams from the continent.

"If anything it’s more tactical. It’s a very small space and all the team have to prepared to work on attacking and defending. You can’t pigeon-hole yourself to a certain position. It’s very much about movement, you work together as a team to get the ball back and you move forward as a team. If you do that you’ll do well.

"The problem the last time we played a tournament out in Germany was the team didn’t really know how to approach the a abbreviated version tactically. With the experience we’ve gained from that we know how to prepare a bit better to face these teams who play the game regularly.

"Rotation is something we learned from the last tournament. Sometimes teams changed every player, as 15 minutes is a long game in 5-a-side terms. So we’ll be constantly swapping players and bringing on fresh legs so everyone will be involved.

It is something the boys are looking forward to.
