Jol's praise for fans

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Jol paid tribute to the Spurs crowd for turning out in such numbers for the Carling Cup tie against Liverpool but could not hide his disappointment over the outcome.

It was a full house at the Lane for what was Martin's first experience of a cup night at home and he was suitably impressed by the atmosphere generated in the ground.

He insists, however, that the team must punish the opposition when they enjoy spells of domination in the game, which was the case in large parts in the quarter final tie.

"It is unbelieveable, I saw the Fulham game against Chelsea and there were only 14,000 people," reacted Martin. "We play our quarter final and had over 36,000.

"I told the players they must realise what sort of club they are playing for. At this club we have a sell-out for a Carling Cup tie. They showed they wanted to go to the semi-finals but unfortunately it didn't happen.

"When you feel you are the better team you have to score goals and we didn't do that. We had possibilities, even Rohan Ricketts with his header I thought was an easy one and we missed.

"We punished ourselves tonight, we had a good game against Middlesbrough on Sunday and we are close. The line between success and failure is so thin and it is amazing that we couldn't get something out of this game.

"I think we showed it because we were the better team, but we should have scored more goals and we didn't do that.

"It is all about top mentality and top quality - maybe we lack that a bit at the moment and we won't rest until we have a team which will make the crowd happy again."
