Jol's delight

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Jol described his appointment as Head Coach on Monday afternoon as 'the biggest achievement of my life'.

The Dutchman was confirmed as Jacques Santini's successor after stepping in for Saturday's encounter with Charlton at the Lane. The 48-year-old joined the club in July as First Assistant to Santini after six years at RKC Waalwijk.

"I would normally say I am very pleased to be here - but I have already been here for four months!" he joked on being asked for a reaction to his appointment. "Of course, your aim as a coach is always to reach the highest level and to be Head Coach of Tottenham Hotspur is the biggest achievement of my life."

The 2002 Dutch Players and Coaches Coach of the Year maintains that progress can be made over the remainder of this season.

"People said at the start that it was a revolution and maybe it is still like that," he added. "However, you can't expect with nearly a whole new squad with some players from abroad that you will do everything in the first season.

"You must be realistic in football, I still think we can finish in the top half and can maybe add one or two players in in January. We have a very good squad now as you could see by us bringing Carrick on in Saturday's game. The aim for us to finish as high as we can in the league.

"I realise what Spurs is all about, I remember from being a young kid that Spurs are one of the biggest clubs in England and, at that time, in Europe too. It is a dream for me to take over and still unbelievable.

"I left my last club after six years because I needed a new challenge, but could never have thought then that I would end up as Head Coach of my favourite club in England."
