Martin Jol was a very happy man after we kicked off our Premiership campaign with a 2-0 win at Portsmouth on Saturday.
An own goal in added time in the first half gave us the lead and momentum going into the second half where Jermain Defoe's superbly executed goal in the 64th minute secured the victory.
Wayne Routledge, Teemu Tainio and Paul Stalteri made their Premiership debuts for the club as we overcame the late losses of Edgar Davids (knee) and Robbie Keane (ankle) through injury - on top of Ledley King, Michael Brown, Sean Davis, Tom Huddlestone and Noe Pamarot - to secure our first opening day win since the 2000-01 season.
"Portsmouth away is always difficult but you wish for a good start in the first game of the season and there were a lot of positive things," said Head Coach Martin at Fratton Park.
"There was no difference between the two sides in the first half because they wouldn't let us build up and kept three players high up the pitch.
"We did better in the last 15 minutes though because we created a spare man with Michael Carrick. He can make the difference.
"The second half was better, we looked to keep possession and were better on the ball.
"As everyone knows, we had some players missing through injuries and looked a bit rusty at times so you cannot complain when you start with a win away from home.
"We were solid and to win 2-0 on the opening day - I am satisfied. In the league every game is difficult so I am a very happy man."
