JOL ON DORTMUND DRAW

Martin Jol was pleased with the performance of the team in the 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

Martin Jol was pleased with the performance of the team in the 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

Our World Cup players - along with Danny Murphy - played their opening games for the First Team this pre-season, but it was Dimitar Berbatov who netted the decisive strike for us to level the scores after Alexander Frei had shot the home side into the lead.

It was Berbatov's fourth goal of the preparation programme, scored in the first half before both teams made considerable changes in the second period.

"We did well in the first half, but still had a couple of chances in the second and I had the feeling that we controlled the match better," reflected Martin. "We had five players starting who had not played 90 minutes yet, so that was a risk, but you have to start somewhere.

"So we had to make a lot of substitutions and, although we did that, we didn't lose our shape and I thought we didn't lose a lot of quality. That is always a bonus.

"In the first 15-20 minutes and when they scored their goal we were a bit patient. I like good build-up, but not to overplay and we were overplaying a bit. They had someone in the hole - Steven Pienaar - and he was pressing. We were playing little one-twos and you can't do that on the edge of your own box.

"They got a free-kick out of that and scored so that is something we have to improve on. In the second half we gave two chances away we shouldn't have because they were 100 per cent chances - Paul made two excellent saves.

"We could have won and that was a good point. If you use 17 players in a match against a team who start their league next week, it is a positive sign."
