Jol on Derby debut

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Jol views it as vital that Tuesday's Carling Cup tie against Burnley broke a sequence of defeats going into the Arsenal game on Saturday.

The Dutchman believes the frame of mind and confidence of the squad has been improved by the 3-0 win at Turf Moor following the disappointment of losing at home to Charlton on Saturday.

The Arsenal encounter is Martin's first Premiership game officially in charge of first team affairs and he is looking forward to sampling a Derby day atmosphere he has heard plenty about.

"I am very happy we played the game on Tuesday because we had a nightmare against Charlton, especially in the first half," reflected the new Head Coach. "There is a better feeling now in the squad and probably around the club - I hope so - and we need a result from the Arsenal game.

"Last year they were happy with a draw after being two down in a terrific atmosphere. I'm only hearing this from other people - now I want to experience it all for myself. I am not here just to enjoy the experience though - I have to look after my team."

Arsenal's unbeaten record was finally de-railed by Manchester United and Martin notes that they have yet to really get back into their Premiership stride with two draws since the Old Trafford loss.

"You shouldn't forget that Arsenal are not in their best spell. They broke the record of staying unbeaten though, so this is probably the best Arsenal side ever.

"We are building and want to do the same, the only aim I have is to produce an unbelievable Tottenham side. Coming back to Arsenal, it will be a tough game, but it is a one-off. If you work hard, show passion and want to make the crowd happy then maybe we can do it."

Meanwhile, Martin moved to correct quotes attributed to him in some newspapers following his appointment suggesting he could match the achievements of the great Bill Nicholson.

"The papers were exaggerating when they said I wanted to be the second Bill Nicholson - it is impossible. What I said was that I want to be a success and become a small part of the history of Tottenham Hotspur."
