Jol aware of Anfield test

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Martin Jol remembers Anfield as a fortress in his playing days - a fortress he now hopes to breach as Head Coach in the Barclays Premiership on Saturday.

Liverpool ruled the roost during Martin's time in England at West Brom and Coventry City between 1981-85.

The Reds won the then First Division championship in successive years (81-82, 82-83, 83-84) when Martin plied his trade in England. They added the European Cup in 1981 and 1984.

To underline their dominance, they had also triumphed before Martin arrived in 75-76, 76-77, 78-79, 79-80 and continued after his move to FC Den Haag in 85-86, 87-88 and their last title in 1989-90.

"Every time I went there as a player it was difficult," recalled Martin, who, as a midfielder, had many a battle with the likes of Souness, Whelan and Sammy Lee.

"They were different times, back then they were the best in England. It was a massive team. I think in my second game I played against Rush, Dalglish, Lawrenson, Hansen.

"It was a different team to now. They are younger - even Gerrard is young - and they have the same problems as any other team because at the moment Chelsea, Arsenal and United are the best three teams in England.

"Everton are four points ahead of them, are doing a terrific job and it will be tough for Liverpool to finish fourth. If they make it, they will have done well."

Martin is a fan of Gerrard. "I think he is the best midfielder in England, pound for pound he's terrific," he added, before re-iterating that it would be quite an achievement to secure fourth spot at the end of the season.

"Liverpool is a big club but they have a new team, a lot of internationals, new players in.

"We played them in the Carling Cup and they played a younger team with a lot of talent.

"I think they are doing pretty well and Benitez is one of the best coaches in Europe. I haven't come across him but everyone knows what he's achieved and he was a good choice for Liverpool. If they qualify for the Champions League again they will have done well."
