Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Tottenham boss Martin Jol was delighted to see his side make a winning start to the season with a fluke first goal and a Jermain Defoe special at Portsmouth.

It was Spurs' first win at Fratton Park in 39 years and Jol was impressed by the way his men ground out the three points.

"There was no difference between the two sides in the first half because they wouldn't let us build up, they kept three players high up the pitch.

We did better in the last 15 minutes though because we created a spare man with Michael Carrick. He can make the difference.

The second half was better but we had some players missing through injuries and looked a bit rusty at times but you cannot complain when you start with a win.

'''Without playing really well, we were solid and to win 2-0 on the opening day - I am satisfied.

Martin Jol reckons Jermain Defoe's strike at Portsmouth underlined why he's so special as a striker.

Jermain pounced on defensive hesitation to latch onto Mido's pass, skip around Sander Westerveld and slide the ball home from a tight angle to put us 2-0 up at Fratton Park.

Andy Griffin's own goal had earlier handed us a boost just before the break and Jermain's first of the season put the issue beyond doubt.

It secured a first opening day win since the 2000-01 season and Jermain was soon celebrating an England call-up with team-mate Paul Robinson and Michael Carrick.

Head Coach Martin said: "I saw two Portsmouth players running back and I didn't think he was even looking at the goal and then he had just enough pace on the ball.

"But you know that's the difference between a player like him and other players."

Martin was natually pleased with the three points. "We didn't create a lot of chances but if you can come through away games like that with a solid performance defensively and a win, we'll do better this season."

Martin Jol reported that Robbie Keane will miss the Republic of Ireland's friendly against Italy onWednesday with an ankle injury.

The striker picked up the problem in training and was forced to sit out our opening day win at Portsmouth on Saturday.

"Robbie twisted his ankle in training," said Martin at Fratton Park. "He won't play for Ireland because his ankle is swollen."
