John's new lease of life
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Comeback kid John Piercy is enjoying a new lease of life at the Lane.
John burst onto the scene with a fine debut against Crewe in the Worthington Cup and three Premiership appearances in October 1999.
But he had to wait until last month’s derby clash against Arsenal to feature again following a frustrating 18 months on the fringes.
He has now appeared in our last two Premiership outings and with injuries mounting up, looks likely to taste the action again at Anfield on Sunday.
John, still just 21, admitted: “Under the old manager I wasn’t going to play and that got my head down a little. A new manager has come in, I’ve had some good games and now my confidence is back up again and looking like I’ve got a future.
“I had a fairly good debut last season, pleased with that, then had a couple of games then just drifted away and wasn’t in the manager’s plans.
“That was up to the manager. I had no problems with that, it was his choice. But a new manager comes in and you get another chance.
“I’m in the last year of my contract but I’ve been talking to David Pleat and the club have said they want to keep me. That’s a good boost for me and nice to have my future sorted out.”
John is also pleased be playing in midfield rather than as a striker — the position he made his breakthrough — but he has played in just about every position in an excellent season for the reserves.
He added: “I’ve had a couple of good reserve games recently, playing in a different position in midfield.
“That’s where I want to play, I’m not a striker and in the games I’ve come on in the past that’s the position I’ve played.
“There are a lot of young lads in at the moment, so it’s difficult. They all give 100 per cent and that shows and I think the fans appreciate that.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
