John's Anfield near miss
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
John Gorman recalled a time when his Swindon side nearly produced the coupon-busting result of the season at Anfield.
John was manager of Swindon during their season in the top-flight after Glenn’s departure for Chelsea. While they won many plaudits for their brand of football, they had little to show for it in terms of results.
But they did give Liverpool one hell of a fright at Anfield in December 1993, leading 2-1 until a late Mark Wright goal saved the Red’s a point and considerable blushes blushes. John Moncur and Keith Scott were the heroes for Swindon.
“We should have won,” said John. “We were 2-1 up with five minutes to go. We absolutely outplayed them and I think John Barnes and Mark Wright scored for them.
“It was a bit frustrating because we actually played them off the field and the Liverpool fans clapped us off the pitch.
“But we don’t want to be clapped off the pitch being good losers on Saturday. We want to go up there and get another result for Tottenham.
“The fans enjoy seeing what we’re trying to achieve through the manager and the coaching staff. There’s a great spirit, we showed that against Chelsea and the crowd really got behind us and we’ve got a next home game against Manchester United.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
“We want to get a great result against Liverpool and we’ll look forward to playing United.”
