Joe's praise for Sandro

Joe Jordan joined the chorus of praise for Sandro after the midfielder's fine performances against AC Milan.

Joe Jordan joined the chorus of praise for Sandro after the midfielder's fine performances against AC Milan.

Harry Redknapp led that praise by describing him as ‘immense’ in the second leg of our Champions League last 16 tie last week.

The Brazil international covered every blade of grass as the Italians enjoyed the greater share of possession and that typified our display as we held on for a goalless draw to progress to the quarter-finals 1-0 on aggregate.

Sandro, who turned 22 this week, was just as impressive in that key victory in the San Siro and, as first team coach Joe insisted, has 'showed his worth' against the Serie A leaders.

“He’s not a typical ‘Brazilian’ player,” said Joe. “You think about the likes of Socrates, Falcao and all those magnificent players. I was fortunate enough to play in that era, but Sandro has his own qualities.

“The partnership with Luka Modric, who is a marvellous footballer, has a nice balance where one blossoms against the other.

“Sandro was asked to do an awful lot against AC Milan because of the possession they had. He really showed his worth because we had to defend.

“He had to put out a few fires, get across the pitch, snuff that player out, get across the pitch again, get another tackle in and that’s his game.

“It wasn’t the case that we wanted to sit back and defend and to absorb the pressure, but you have hold your hands up sometimes and the team we were playing against were passing it so well, moving it well and had a player like Seedorf showing all his qualities.

“So we had to rely on players like Sandro to see where those passes were going and to anticipate, intercept – and that’s exactly what he did.”
