JJ's England joy

Jermaine Jenas played his part in a memorable win for England in Croatia on Wednesday night.

Jermaine Jenas played his part in a memorable win for England in Croatia on Wednesday night.

The midfielder entered the fray for the injured Joe Cole after 55 minutes of this key World Cup qualifier in Zagreb.

Less than 10 minutes later he set up Wayne Rooney for England's third goal in a fine 4-1 win - Croatia's first-ever qualifying loss on home soil.

In doing so, he heaped the misery on his Spurs team-mates Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka, who both played the full 90 minutes for Croatia.

Theo Walcott stole the headlines with a hat-trick and it was 1-0 when JJ came on for Cole, who was cut and left dazed in an aerial challenge that saw Robert Kovac sent off and Cole stretchered off.

Walcott soon made it 2-0 and then JJ did his stuff, hitting the byline before cutting back for Rooney to steer home for 3-0. Mario Mandzukic netted a consolation but Walcott had the final word to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1 on the night.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gareth Bale was again heavily involved as Wales suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in Russia - with our new signing Roman Pavlyuchenko on target for the home side.

Bale, who put in another full shift with Chris Gunter, was fouled in the penalty area in the first half and picked himself up to take the spot kick - only to see it saved by Igor Akinfeev.

Pavlyuchenko made no mistake with his penalty after Konstantin Zyryanov had been brought down by Carl Robinson to make it 1-0 in Moscow.

However, Bale hit back in the second half, brilliantly bursting between two defenders before cutting the ball back for Joe Ledley to equalise.

Unfortunately for the young Welsh pair, Pavel Pogrebnyak's late strike snatched victory in the Group Four World Cup qualifier.
