Jimmy 'in awe' of Bill

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Jimmy Neighbour lived every schoolboy's dream from the terraces to the team - and says he has Bill Nicholson to thank for it all.

A tricky winger in his days at Spurs, Norwich City and West Ham, Jimmy used to watch the double side with his father at the Lane as a lad and, over 40 years on, remains at the club as an Academy coach.

Jimmy joined the club as a 16-year-old in 1966, signed professional forms in 1968 and made his debut in 1970.

He joined the tributes following Bill's sad passing on October 23.

"I have wonderful memories of Bill," said Jimmy, who made over 150 appearances before his move to Carrow Road in 1976. "If it wasn't for Bill giving me the opportunity at that age I might not be doing what I'm doing now and I'm sure there are a lot of people who feel the same.

"I was in awe of Bill. I used to watch the double team from the terraces with my dad, watching the likes of Cliff Jones, Dave Mackay, John White and I was in awe of that team.

"Leaving school, meeting Bill and being part of the club was a priviledge for me and I see still it that way. The reason I made it was down to Bill and Eddie Baily. I was proud to be part of that."

Jimmy insisted the achievements of Bill's second great team in the early 1970s should not be overlooked after they won two League Cups, the UEFA Cup and reached the UEFA Cup Final again in 1974.

"They were very successful times," added Jimmy. "Perhaps people forget about that a little because of the double and that era.

"They were great teams, great eras, Bill created that and I don't think they'll be a manager like him again. He's the greatest manager this club ever had and one of the greatest the game has had."
