JD wary of Sunderland

06 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Jermain Defoe has admitted the whole squad is aware of the threats posed by Sunderland ahead of Saturday’s outing at the Stadium of Light.

The veteran front man knows all about our hosts this weekend and in particular their manager, Gus Poyet, after his spell as a player with us between 2001 and 2004, in addition to his time on our coaching staff back in 2007-08.

And as we look to build on Wednesday night’s 2-1 win at Fulham, JD says our more experienced campaigners have been quick to impart their knowledge of Saturday’s opponents onto our relative newcomers.

“A lot of the lads who haven’t played there before might not know what to expect but we’ve been speaking about it and told them it’s a tough place to go,” the 31-year-old said.

“But if we play as we did the other night then we should win the game because on our day we can beat anyone with the quality we have in the squad.”

JD also pointed to Sunderland’s recent performances against other sides with top-of-the-table ambitions ahead of what promises to be a tricky test in the North East.

“It’s another tough one,” the striker said. “Look at teams like Man City, who have already lost there. They pushed Chelsea close in midweek as well.

“Every game is difficult and they will be fighting to get a result. They’ve got a good manager who we know well, of course.

“He has good football knowledge, he’s a strong character, he used to play for us and was a coach here too.

“You always know what it’s like when you come up against former players or managers.”
