Jan's case for the defence

16 November 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

It says a lot about our defence that the goals conceded column reads just six in 11 matches in the Premier League so far this season. That record comes despite Toby Alderweireld's absence through injury for three matches - and Jan Vertonghen feels that almost underlines the collective spirit keeping opponents at bay.

Jan and Kyle Walker have been the mainstays, ever-present with 11 matches each, Hugo Lloris has played nine while Danny Rose, Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Kevin Wimmer have all chipped in.

The defensive record - again, the best in the Premier League with Chelsea next on nine goals conceded - has contributed to our unbeaten start to the campaign.

“Defensively we are doing very well as a team, even better than last year when we were strong at the back," stated Jan. "Obviously it’s a shame that Toby picked up an injury, but everyone has stepped up and done well.

“Eric came into the defence and performed well, Kevin had a very good game against Arsenal last time out - it was actually the first time we had ever played together - while whichever of our full-backs play, they slot into the team and help us at the back and going forwards. When Hugo hasn’t played in goal, Michel has come in and played really well.

“It just shows that we have a great squad and our ability to defend is about the whole team, everyone does an amazing job.”
