Jan targets win double

28 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Jan Vertonghen summed up Belgium’s target ahead of Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Cyprus and Israel by stating: “We need to win.”

Favourites to qualify from Group B, Belgium find themselves fourth of six going into this week’s matches with Israel top - they play second-placed Wales on Saturday - and Cyprus currently third.

“We have Cyprus at home and Israel away and we need to win,” said Jan, who has 64 caps to his name. “We’re favourites but we’re fourth in the group now.

“We haven’t lost but we drew against Bosnia away and Wales at home so the pressure is on us.”

Packed full of Premier League talent, including Jan’s team-mates Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli, Belgium reached the quarter-finals of last summer’s World Cup and are highly-fancied to perform well in the finals in France next year.

“People expect more from us and they have to,” added Jan, who has started every Premier League game for us since mid-November. “We do as well. It’s normal.

“We have a very good squad and if I was a supporter I would want big results from our team as well.”
