Jan talks World Cup

13 June 2014|Tottenham Hotspur

Jan Vertonghen selected Brazil and Germany as the teams to watch out for at the World Cup - as well as Belgium - and he would love to face England in the latter stages of the tournament.

The defender is one of three Spurs players in the highly-fancied Belgian squad with Nacer Chadli and Mousa Dembele.

He told earlier in the week that Belgium would take it step-by-step in their first finals since 2002, after giving his views to us before departing for the summer.

"For me, it’s Brazil and Germany," he said. "Spain will be up there, but if they face the power of Brazil with the crowd behind them or the pace Germany play, then I think they will face a difficult game.

"Holland got to the final four years ago, the Euros weren’t that good two years but they always play well.

"They have a good coach and good players, their own style, a bit like how Germany and Spain play, although slightly different. They have Robben, Van Persie. They have a strong group, Chile and Spain. I hope they do well, I have friends there.

"England have Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. You never know. England can do very well, the same as Holland, they need to get through the group stages. I hope they do well. Maybe we can face them later in the summer!"

Belgium kick-off against Nabil Bentaleb's Algeria on Tuesday and face Russia and South Korea in Group H.

Jan added: "We want to do well in the group stage, we want to go through to the next round and then we might play Germany or Portugal. It will be hard enough to get through the group stage."
