Jan Vertonghen echoed Tim Sherwood’s views on our win at Newcastle and admitted: “It couldn’t have gone better.”
Head Coach Tim pinpointed a determination to make a fast start at St James’ Park and the plan was carried out to perfection.
We’d already gone close twice when Emmanuel Adebayor struck the key opening goal on 19 minutes.
Paulinho doubled the lead at the start of the second half, Hugo Lloris made two magnificent saves to keep it at 2-0 and then Ade and a fine strike from Nacer Chadli capped the night at 4-0.
Captain for the night after Younes Kaboul came in for Michael Dawson, Jan was a happy man afterwards.
“We said to ourselves that we had to start well because we hadn’t done that in the last couple of games and that’s what we showed,” said Jan.
“We didn’t just do it at the start, we did it for the 90 minutes and dominated. It was a great game for us, we were clinical.”
Jan had praise for Ade, Hugo and another big presence on the night – our fans – who made themselves heard throughout from high up in the Leazes Stand.
“Ade is a big man for us, not just scoring goals but keeping the ball as well,” added Jan. “At the moment he’s very good for us on the pitch and in the dressing room.
“Hugo made some great saves, especially the header in the second half. We know he’s capable of these saves and it’s great to have a keeper like him behind us.
“The fans were high up and difficult to see but we could hear them all night. They are unbelievable and we’re all delighted we could give them a win. It’s a long journey for them.”
